Mikumi National Park
Overview
Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and popular wildlife destinations in the south of Tanzania, the park located approximately 300 km west of Dar as Salaam along the Dar as Salaam to Mbeya highway. Known for its stunning plains and baobab trees, and special place for wide variety of wildlife, including rare species like the Sable antelope, African hunting dogs, blue wildebeest, and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest. The southern part of the park features beautiful rolling foothills and vast miombo woodland savanna, making it a spectacular destination for those travelers who love nature.
Mikumi National Park is famous for its diverse range of wildlife, offering visitors the opportunity to see some of the Africa “Big Five” like lion, elephant, and buffalo. Among its highlights are the hippos that inhabit a pair of mud pools located 5 km from the main entrance, often accompanied by various waterbirds.

Mid-Morning: Exploring Mikumi National Park
8:30 AM – 12:00 PM: Explore the diverse habitats of Mikumi National Park. The morning hours are prime time for wildlife viewing, and you can expect to see a variety of animals such as:Elephants, Lions, Zebras, Giraffes, Buffalos, Birds of prey and other bird species
Midday: Picnic Lunch
12:00 PM: Break for a picnic lunch at one of the designated spots within the park. Enjoy a delicious meal surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of the African wilderness.
Early Afternoon: Continued Safari Adventure
12:30 PM – 2:30 PM: Continue your game drive through different sections of the park. Visit notable areas such as the Mkata Floodplain, which is famous for its high concentration of wildlife, and the Hippo Pools where you can observe hippos and crocodiles up close.
Late Afternoon: Preparation for Departure
3:00 PM: Return to the airstrip for your departure. Reflect on the day’s adventures and the incredible wildlife encounters you’ve experienced.
Late Afternoon: Return to Zanzibar
3:30 PM: Flight departs from Mikumi National Park back to Zanzibar.
